"Youngman- Repair HT - 6 months update and pics"

Dear Forum readers,
Many forum members may remember that Youngman had his repair hair transplant procedure performed at our clinic in Nov 2004.
He recently sent some pics of his current situation.
It is 6 months post surgery.
His was a case of strip surgery performed at some other clinic in the USA.
Some of the intricacies of his repair were discussed at the following link.
http://www.hairsite4.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=12&topic_id=18041&mode=full

Permit me to thank all those who participated actively on the above thread with their suggestions.

One reason for the unsatisfactory results from the previous HT had been due to
1. Wrong graft angulation
2. 2 and 3 hair grafts placed in the front rows of hairline.
3. Widely spaced out grafts.

The repair mainly consisted in flooding the area with large number of properly angled grafts.

I beleive a proper angulation of the grafts (among other things) makes a lot of difference to the final outcome.

Youngman does not need to wear cap/hat now.

(The present day pictures are taken by youngman himself. The before and intraoperative pics have been taken mostly by us at the clinic when he was with us).

Regards,
Dr.A

Much improved for an early six month stage. I gather Youngman will have additional growth/dexterity within the coming months as well...
Reconstruction/repair of the hairline is certainly evident and in feathered fashion. 2000 grafts were utilized with proper architectural balance and specified areas appear to posess infant FU's as we speak.
Dr. Poswal, What approximate percentage of grafts do you believe have experienced growth as of yet with this patient? thx

Ciao!

Good question EH. I think that it still looks pretty thin, though much improved! Can he expect a much fuller looking hairline Doc? I think it looks much more natural but there still seems to be a lot of thicker hairs growing upfront. Will smaller thinner hairs be coming in to soften the front? I do think he looks much better though!

Thanks,

Joe III

Dear EH and Joeii,
Yes, I think there will be further improvement.
In our experience, it takes 10 months to 1 year for the hair transplant to "mature".
As ALL the hair grow in and attain a uniform length and calibre, the apparent density increases.

Youngman, the work looks great. I'm happy for you, I know you must be very happy? who took the 6 month pictures, just imagine how good you would look in the pictures if they had been taken in a photography studio with a $2000.00 camera like a lot of doctors post there photos with. I think you look great and I am also excited about my results, but I think I might take a little longer than you, since I used all bh. congrats man I wish you well with getting on with your life.

Many posters subscribe to the proverbial monthly percentile law of averages. (i.e. 30% at 3 months, 40% at 4 months, 50% at 6 months etc etc etc)
Dr.A, do you believe this to be somewhat accurate, or are most transplant cases specifically individual dependant and results will vary in most circumstances? thx

Ciao!

Dr. A, very nice for only 6 months. In the old link you said it was not possible to do hyper acute angle for youngman even though you wanted to. IMO, his hair looks much nicer the way it is now. I don't think the hyper acute graft placement will suit youngman. He is too young to have the combover look.

Dear Jeepguy,
Hyperacute angle is a tool to be used as circumstance dictates.
Its best use is for people with extensive loss and limited donor.
In Youngman's case, the choice was to
1.follow the random angles previously administered, OR
2.utilise a relatively acute angle.

In his case the grafts were placed at an uniform but acute angle (as is seen in the immediate after graft placement picture).

Dear EH,
The 50% growth at 6 months is more in nature of a simplistic thumbrule. The growth is often more than that, but some transplanted hair just start sprouting while others have had time to grow long.

The next 6 months should see a maturation period during which most hair will reach uniform dimensions and provide more coverage.

Dr.A

Updating the archives and came across this post from Youngman, thought I would include his comments in this thread.

http://www.hairsite4.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=12&topic_id=21040&mode=full

At exactly three months growth is starting to be noticable. Throughout the hairline there are single hair grafts popping up all over the place. In the crown I am starting to feel little hairs popping out. It is hard to tell exactly how many are growing because they are mostly between existing hairs. I will post pics soon to show the results up to date. I had 2000 grafts in total. 1500 in the hairline and 500 in the crown. 3 months postop is defintely to soon to tell the final product but yes I am happy with the growth so far at 3 months.

Hairsite - thanks for the post. Knowing that only 1500 went into the hairline makes me feel better. I find the results much better now and in line with the amoutn of graphs he had put in there. At 6 months for 1500 he has indeed had very good growth, though I still think more is needed but the next several months should be a good indication of the possibilities.

Youngman and I emailed each other for the longest time last year before he finally decided to go to Dr. Arvind. He is one of the few posters whom I know well. I have not seen Youngman in the forum for a long time. I was a little concerned so I decided to email Youngman and inquire if there are any problems with the procedure he had with Dr. Arvind.

Here's the email I received from Youngman today

Hello

I am trying to post on hairsite but I forgot my password. I keep asking one to be sent but I am not getting it. The transplant is amazing I think. The pictures do not show half of it. It is getting thicker by the day and when I just mess it up and wear it like that you can't even tell I am thinning at all. It has given me back the confidence I was hoping for. You may post my email on your site and allow anyone to ask questions. Thanks again for all your help. I will try to post more on the site but I have been quite busy lately.

Youngman,
When did you first notice the grafts crown/vertex (BH source) commence growth? In your experience, did these grafts entail initial growth in a similar time period as the frontal grafts? (scalp derived)
Thx

Hello Everyone
I think the results are astounding. I was away in japan and came back to the us recentely and when my parents seen me they couldnt beleive it. I was also away from my girlfriend for a month and a half between 4 and 5 and 1/2 post op and whenn she seen me she said what did you do your hair looks so much thicker. I just said started taking propecia. Anyway I wish i could take some better pics because the work is really great. I have not got one question from anyone asking if it is a transplant. The growth between the 5th and 6th month were the greastest. I dont feel many more hairs popping out in the front but on the crown they are still coming here and there. I will be going back to Dr. Arvind in the future to have hairs transplanted onto the bridge of my head along with some in the scar. I want to once again thank hairsite, dr. Arvind, and his staff. Any questions please feel free to email me. semper45@hotmail.com

Also,

Dr. A, Can you post photos by race/ethnic origin on your website? Thanks. You seem to be the most ethical surgeon I have ever heard about. And it is admirable that you let one of your patients change his mind at the last minute about the number of grafts he wanted (drastically reduced) recently.
