"DEM photos 3 months later - Dr. A's"

Dr. A's clinic has been in the forefront of the Donor exchange method (DEM), having performed the first DEM surgeries ever.

Therefore, I think, the responsibility falls upon us to present regular updates of the growth of the DEM grafts.

Following are the photos of a patient in whom the DEM grafts were placed in the supraauricular and postauricular donor areas.

The patient had got a DEM procedure performed in the first week of April 2005. He, incidentally was our 4th patient of DEM.

On close inspection of the donor area, when he was due for his 3 month postop inspection, we noticed that unlike the empty spaces that are visible in conventional follicular unit extraction method, the DEM treated area showed many fine hair growing.

-The hair is finer in diameter than the surrounding scalp hair.
-There are no white or hypopigmented dots in the donor area.
-The epidermis is completely formed in the donor area.

We will try to post frequent updates of the patient.
The aim will be to see what characteristics the hair from the DEM graft eventually takes.

During the DEM procedure

At completion of the procedure

The DEM grafts can be seen as finer hair at many places.
I have attempted to highlight the places by paint option.

At 3 months whatever hair that is growing will be incipient tiny fine hair. Give it another 2 or 3 months to see full results.

I have tried to capture on the camera
-the growth of the DEM grafts
-the lack of any pigmentory defects
-the excellent healing and re epidermisation.

The growth can only be see at extreme close up photos.

The body hair are distinguishable, though with great difficulty, at extreme close up at the moment.
I do not know what characteristics the BH will eventually take. But it will become progressively more difficult to distinguish them among the surrounding scalp hair.

The only thing that will point to their presence will be the absence of "empty spaces" from where the hair follicles are extracted otherwise.

I beleive these are the first ever photos of its kind showing the initial growth of the DEM grafts.

I have used the paint option to highlight the adjacent DEM graft growth.

Dr. San,
Thanks a lot for the pictures. A picture is worth a thousand words. I think I am also feeling some very fine hair growth in the DEM grafts.
Now, if only they take on all the head hair characteristics, it will be great.
But I suppose, that will be like expecting too much.

Eric, never say never.i believe when they grow in and cycle, it will be very hard to tell the difference between the scalp hair and bh.

Body hair grows and over period of time takes on all scalp hair characteristics. Did in my case.

Dr San,

Are you going to be able to tell us the percentage of grafts that did grow using DEM and their characteristic change, if any? Future patients would like to know conclusively what their final outcome should give.

What will you tell future patients?

Also with Dr Gho, people are speculating if the donor hairs actually regrew. What will you do differently to convince us that the donor hair did grow for a fact and that the characteristics did change?

I am guessing that you are collecting similar stats with regular BHT?

Dear ADP,
Dr. San will be updating the forum about the various BHT, donor sealing, DEM cases. Especially the ones in which we are able to highlight the results in a very objective manner.
As we did with the results of the Donor sealing protocol, we will try, as far as possible, to be able to post pictures of the areas with the hair trimmed down or shaved.
Yes! we are and will be continuing to get the maximum data out in the public domain regarding what characteristics the body hair take on over the years.

Regards,
Dr.A
