"BH grafts - pictures and video of growth"

Dear forum readers,
It is very important to document the growth of the transplanted body hair as well as the scarring, if any, in the body donor areas.

Not all techniques being used to perform bodyhair transplants are equal.
Therefore, in my opinion, we should demonstrate the exact growth of the transplanted body hair as well as the appearance of the donor area, with clear pictures and videos.
This may help dispel many myths surrounding Body hair transplants.

-----------------------------------------

Following is a case of a patient who went for a small test session of BHT.
Factor 1 - He is a young patient, desirous of a low flat hairline. However, he has a strong family history of hairloss progressing to NW 6.

Factor 2 - He has good body hair growth.

Factor 1 is against him going for such ambitious HTs.
Factor 2 is his only hope, at present, in case he has extensive hairloss at a future date and runs out of scalp donor.

However, its entirely logical on the patient's part to see the efficacy of BHT firsthand, before proceeding further.

The test session was performed in December 2005.
Chest hair grafts were used. They were transplanted so that the growth should not be confused with scalp hair growth.
The patient did not use any Minoxidil in the body donor area nor the recipient areas after the transplant.

The patient is very satisfied with the growth. He first noticed hair growth in the recipient area as early as the 2 month mark.

The extractions were performed by the expanding needle concept.

He now plans to go for a scalp FUSE procedure.

Please let me know if you have any queries.
Regards and a Happy Independence day for India,

Following is the videoclip showing the growth of the transplanted body hair as well as the recipient area in Aug 2006.
For those who know Hindi language, the patients comments can be heard in the videoclip about the growth as well as the exceptional healing in the donor area.

Following are the comparative pictures of the donor area, placed in a single slide for ease of comparison.

Thank you, Dr. A.
Good growth and pristine donor. No wonder the patient is happy.
I wish all doctors post similar clear pix.
I am tired of seeing blurred pix.

Any close up pictures of the extractions? I seem to see some where there's no hole. Is that the method optimist suggested?

how many grafts is that, Dr A,

how many grafts of type do you think a well responding patient would need to cover a 144cm sq bald crown

do you think a crown can be covered by all body hair and look good?

The patient recieved 50 grafts.
How many grafts a person would require when using body hair grafts depends on -
1. the # of 1,2 and 3 hair grafts.
2. the calibre of the grafts.

The thicker the calibre and the more the 2/3 hair grafts, the less the total # of grafts required.

It is also important to use the approach of pairing of 1 hair FUs when using body hair.

Typically, the proposed body donor hair should be atleast 50% as thick as the scalp hair, when transplanting on scalp recipient areas (barring the temples and hairline feathering zones).

Yes, its true that different people are likely to have different cosmetic effects from BHTs as the individual variation in the bodyhair is much more than the scalp hair.

Its also important to watch out for harmful topicals. Some of the new ones like Minoxidil 5% with PPG as well as those with steroids may be harmful to the transplanted fine body hair. However, thats far from proven. For the time being, we are advising our patients to use either Minoxidil 2% or the PPG free minoxidil or no Minoxidil.

Very impressive.
If my 1022 BHT grow out like this, I'll be very happy.

His body hair grew very long, no?

With results like this, I suspect we'll be seeing lots more BHT cases very soon.
Kudos, Dr. A.

Peace and Jai.

Dr. A, the test was done using his body hair , why does he want scalp fue now ? The body hair is obviously growing and he has good body hair density, why not continue to give him body hair ?

I am also a bit confused by this patient's decision. He appears to had a very successful BHT test. At least from the PIC, his BHT and scalp hair appear indistinguishable. Why would he then chose scalp FUE over additional BHT? Seems to defeat the purpose of the BHT test in the first place, unless he was trying to ensure a fairly unlimited donor source (in his case), for the further loss Dr. A indicated was genetically probable.

That said, I am very encouraged by this BHT result. I don't see many PIC's representing BHT of significant length. I am not sure if it is due to shorter styles tending to give greater allusion of coverage, or if longer BHT styles tend to get a bit wiry. This does not appear an issue for the patient.

On a humerous note, this thread is the second time my girl friendly caught me looking at a guy's hairy chest. She's starting to look at me kind of funny...

The patient's chest hair have grown successfully. However, their length is marginally more than what it was at its original location.
The patient feels that he should use the scalp hair first as he is planning for the front hairline area and may want to keep his hair very long.
The body hair are being kept as a reserve to be used in combination with the scalp hair if extensive hairloss does occur in future.

I understand this is his choice, but it just doesn't make sense from two different perspectives.

1) I believe the rate of hair growth generally grows roughly at a rate of 1/2 inch per month. These hairs appear to be over 4 inches in length and that would be appropriate for that length of time. Almost all transplanted hairs undergo some form of "shock" which stunts the growth initially even if it doesn't fall out. Bottom line is that these hairs have grown as fast as scalp hair would have over the same period and might grow considerably longer over time.

2) With this kind of success, there is absolutely no reason to mess with scalp hair unless it is as a last resort. I would see what could be done with body hair and save the scalp hair until necessary and you could have the choice to place it strategically. He could also use DEM.

BTW, who wouldn't be thrilled for this kind of success!!!

Yes, you can visit my site, but here is the link to the 6 & 7 month pics (8 month pics aren't much better if any). You need to click on the pics and they enlarge. Definite growth, but ... ??

http://bhtadventresultsresults67.blogspot.com/

Results are less than phenomenal and my expectations have been lowered. Hair has grown, but not in significant enough numbers to make a huge difference. Not quite sure why. I stay in consultation with Dr A.

Hoping for BHT results!

I would suggest that the patient consider scalp hair for density and body hair for refinement of the hairline as it's finer.

I also wanted to say I for one really appreciate Dr. A as he's always very involved in the community. His ever learning and questioning nature is welcoming.

checkingin,
I am sorry, I really hope you are a late bloomer. Dr A. seems to have been getting consistent results generally but your case is the most disappointing of his that I have seen at 8 months.

I really hope for your sake that it turns around in the next 4 months. I am hoping you will keep us all updated - it is much appreciated.

Wow, BHT is confusing, it is really hard to evaluate.
