"Shed at month 14 - advice appreciated."

Hi guys,

I've been on dut (plus much longer term minox, nizoral, & infrequent folligen & emu oil) for about 14 months with good results - hairloss stopped and some regrowth all over. No sheds of any signifcance.

Unfortunately the last 6 weeks or so has seen significant shedding at the front. I'm losing it where I always tend to start losing it when a treatment is no longer working and am therefore pretty terrified that dut has stopped working for me.

The question is...is this likely to just be a shed that a lot of guys here seems to have experienced, or is this the beginning of the end of dut effectiveness for me?

Thanks guys. As with so many of you out there, hairloss has had an utterly detrimental and profoundly negative impact on my life (34 now - been fighting this for 15 years). I am dealing with it a little better as I get older, but that worry that another 'wonder drug' is no longer working for me scares the hell out of me.

Hey neverbald - one every two days. Do you think OI need to increase / decrease dosage? Cheers.

...I need to clarify what I'm seeing. I know from experience that a lot of guys will hate anything negative they see about dut, so I'm going to keep things in perspective.

When I say significant shedding, I mean significant to me. Although my hairline still looks pretty good, I have definitely lost some hair in my left, and possibly right temple areas. - It is very noticably thinner both wet and dry than it was a couple of months ago.

The shedding itself hasn't been massive - maybe 10-15 hairs in the comb / falling out when I'm styling my hair in the morning, but has been going on for quite a few weeks now.

As I said, one (genuine) avodart every 2 days, for the last 14 months.

Thanks in advance.

Ataman..I'd try one DUT every day. With DUT hair should be getting thicker overall, not thinner in anycase. I'd try it for 6 months at least.

It's still low enough to avoid side effects apart from some libido issue perhaps, but no big deal compared to the stress of losing hair.

I know what you mean about being freaked out when it "stopps working"..I had the same episode 2 years ago when FIN crapped out on me and I was terrifyied and so depressed after all these years feeling "protected" by FIN.

At theat time this message forum was full of very negative comments about DUT, some posters were saying that they lost the hairline BECAUSE of DUT etc.. but that turned out to be mostly BS. DUT is the best and most powerful drug out there so far.

It looks like you might have reached a stage in your life where either your existing hair is getting more DHT sensitive OR your body is producing more DHT, or both... therefore the actual dosage is perhaps "not working" anymore.
NB

Thanks neverbald, appreciate your comments. What I'm going to do is see how things go over the next month or so, and if they don't look great I'll move up to 1 a day.

Have a good xmas & new year.

i know it is hard. i was in depression
if nothing work - u have to except it. i did except that i am not looking good like before. but in the end it made me a better person
i took so many meds antidepressant because of that - but when i understood that we r a part of nature - and if meds that come from this world dont stop it - u have to face this fact. u have a lot to offer with or without hair - i am 31 and it started 6 years ago - propecia took many month to work in the back and dutasteride worked after 2 month .but i lost most of my hair. do what ever u can and try to love yourself. i cannot make u feel better - i just know how terrible it was for me - i was always very good looking guy and it changed my life. i stayed in my room and took hat. be strong.
if u cannot chang - except. u cannot fight nature. nature is huge and u r just a part of it. love and be strong

Mike, I didn't have time to reply properly before. Thanks so much for your kind words.

I have read a few times on these forums how baldness 'made someone a better person', and I believe it, but in my case this just isn't the case. Before I started losing hair I was a very kind, caring, considerate and sensitive person, who had many friends, and generally got on very well with people.

Like you, I'm also good looking and I think this is part of the problem. The looks are ME. I'm used to behaving a certain way around people, and getting treated a certain way. To change this will be to take away my personality

Since losing hair I have become more selfish, more self-centred, far quieter and much less predictable. The irony is that, even at this very worrying time, I still just about look like I have a full head of hair. - But over the years the loss, worry, growth etc. cycle has worn me down to be a quite different person. Probably more mature but still a far less likable person.

I hugely admire your approach, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate your kind words, but for me I am going to fight this with anything and everything as long as I can. I want to keep what is still left of ME, and I feel that if I don't I really will completely lose who I am.

I have lost around 240 hairs a day for 3 months last summer and thought I was giving my last bow(ler). 3 months later, my hairloss is down to less than it has ever been on an average and I think that I have now more hair than I did last spring. There's still hope round the corner. And what's more, I may be discovering that DHT is not a such outstanding factor as alleged. My DHT serum level literally sky rocketed during the loss... and got even higher as hairloss was progressively halting, pointing to the fact that some other pathways seem to exist to counter hairloss. Green tea, fish oils ( cod liver in particular), high dose biotin (7mg), 15% minox, spiro solution (not cream in my case), flax lignans are nowpart of my regimen whereas I did not increase the fin dose. I have even begun lowering it by increments... but too early to say. If things turn bad again, I'll get back to the previous doses.
So, as a conclusion, never give up.

Hi Mike. We might lose all the hair we so love, but we definitely should not lose the spirit to live life bueautifully, despite being bald. I know it's BS im saying, but nonetheless, it might worth the BS anyhow. Cheers and have a happy bald life.

Ataman, I'm having the exact same experience ... hairloss in the front after 12 months or so on dutasteride. Like you I still look like I have a full head of hair, but the end of that is near. The thinning in the front has become pretty pronounced over the last few months. I've always been a good looking guy and I'm used to being treated that way ... I try to envision myself with a shaved head (which I've never done before), worry that when it does grow in somewhat everyone will be able to see how patchy I've become up front. Literally patchy.

I was taking one dutasteride a day but now I'm taking 3 or 4 a week based on people's comments about dutasteride potentially being deleterious to the hairline.

Question: does anyone have a firm idea of whether this kind of shedding (hairline on dutasteride) seems to be from too much or too little of the drug?

I keep on believing that the double effect of DUT is double edged as well and that the androgenic receptors of the scalp in its anterior part do not function the same way. There might be some kind of error in the reading of 5ar inhibition within the hair follicle or some curious sharp shortening of the hair cycle length. The exclusive and straight 5ar II path that finasteride uses is either efficient or non efficient but seemingly much less often harmful to the hair cycle length in the front area than dicey dutasteride whose more potent 5ar II effect might be disrupted or cancelled in some cases by its likewise 5ar I effect. If I remember correctly, only 5ar type II can be found within the hair follicle, which makes the concommitant use of 5ar type I look a little fishy...This is my opinion.
